And you are . . .?

A writer and professor (and animal lover)! I’ve written a bunch of kids’ books and was an editor of kids’ books for many, many years. In fact, I’ve been around kidlit for about half my life. LOVE IT. I am an assistant professor of creative writing at Rowan University, so I get to talk about this stuff for my job. Can you believe it? I’m super lucky.

I have two cats—here they are! Aren’t they cute? They totally are.

So . . . writing, amirite?

You ARE right. Are you wondering about my process? I’d call it “chaos.” Like most writers, I have a full-time job and many other responsibilities and so I write in the nooks and crannies of life. I love it, though! I mean, I hate/love it. It’s a big pain when you’re trying to get a story going . . . but when you hit that stride . . . You know what I mean. It’s amazing!

Advice for aspiring writers?

Most people say, “write” if you want to write. And that’s very good advice. Do that. You should also do a lot of reading.

But here’s my big advice to you: DAYDREAM. Space out. Follow your imagination. Let yourself go. Unplug and stare off into the distance. I can’t stress that enough. When you give yourself permission to follow the story in your head, some really awesome things happen! Do it daily and see what happens.

Did you say you have cats?

I thought you’d never ask. I mentioned them, like, three questions ago. I do have cats. Here they are again. They are the cutest cats that ever were.

Except for my other, perfect cat, Clarence who shuffled off this mortal coil in 2012. I made an impulse decision to get him when I was 19 and he turned out to be my soul cat. I miss that little dude.

Do you do other things besides space out and talk about your cats?

Not really . . . ? But for the sake of this bio, I’ll talk about some other things. I LOVE horror movies and horror books. And Halloween. And anything spooky! I also like doing crafty things (though I’m not very good at it) and I love watching women’s soccer. And baby animals. I really, really love baby animals.

You should ask me when my birthday is.

Uh, OK. . . . When is your birthday?

IT’S ON HALLOWEEN! ISN’T THAT COOL?!  We all know that’s the best holiday, right?

Anything else we should know?

Nope.
